More random scribblings [Apr. 14th, 2012|10:41 pm]
I'm not sure where this is going to end. A story, or a life plan.

---

I went up the mountain, and never came down.

All were welcome, it was less a monastery, and more a retreat. Discussions were encouraged, at the appropriate times. Everyone pitched in. Growing things, cleaning, building.

Because sometimes, it all became too much. Too much noise, too many distractions, too many choices. So instead, you spent time thinking.

Time to yourself, thinking, is a hell of a thing. Taking a step back is a hard thing to do, going back and looking at things from a larger perspective.

No cell phones, no Internet, no mail. You, your thoughts, and a pretty awesome view. Time enough to get yourself together. Or back together, in many cases.

As per tradition, of course, everyone wore robes, and had shaved heads (Not tonsures tho, those look... weird).

If people wanted to bring religion in, then they were welcome to. It wasn't a requirement, there were no required early morning prayers, no mass chanting in Latin, just.... time to reflect. Time to think, to get used to yourself again (and, I realize, this is hard to understand if you haven't ever done it).

The quiet was the biggest thing. There was, of course, the normal background noise, people sweeping, coughing, the sounds of day to day life. But no tv, no radio, no typing.

A lot of people couldn't handle it. They needed the noise, which is fine. This just wasn't for them.

Foodsperiment for the night [Mar. 5th, 2012|02:48 pm]
As I shan't have as much time to foodsperiment in the upcoming future, here we go.

Tater. 1. White, quartered (give or take).
Cream 'o Mushroom Soup, condensed. 1
Can 'o water for it. 3/4
Can 'o mushroom stock. Ditto. 3/4
Garlic Black Bean Sauce, some (2 tbsp? 3?)
Pork Chop : 1

My tiny crockpot should make this into something delicious in (now less than) 6 hours. We're hoping. I may throw a few straw mushrooms in there at < 1h to go, but I probably have enough mass to make a fine fine meal.

Mithrasmas Dinner [Dec. 25th, 2011|05:14 pm]
[Tags|]

1 cup rice
2 containers portobello mushroom & madeira bisque
1 chicken breast, frozen
some mushrooms, rough chop
some garlic powder (thought i still had some garlic. i did not)
last of the chicken stock (1cup?)

rice, chicken stock, 1 of the bisque in first. stir, 'cause you wanna make sure all the rice gets delicious bisque love
mushrooms
chicken (frozen)
more bisque
more mushrooms
garlic powder

8 hours for cooking, i think, though probably fine after 6

This would probably be even more delicious with a pork loin, and replacing the rice with potatoes (and, ok, a couple rough chopped carrots), but I don't have a big enough slow cooker for that (nor could I eat a whole pork loin in any reasonable time).

This weeks' experiment [Dec. 18th, 2011|06:48 am]
[Tags|]

Similar to last week. There's still potatoes, and mushrooms (though, this week, red potatoes, and crimini mushrooms). Instead, though, we're using Italian dressing instead of the cream 'o mushroom soup. I've got a great marinated/baked thing that uses said dressing, so should be tasty, we'll see in 6-8 hours tho.

Also, there's something wonderful about pulling a chicken breast out of the freezer, and going "that's a big chicken breast" (I bought individually wrapped and vacuum sealed chicken last week).

More recipes! [Dec. 14th, 2011|09:14 pm]
[Tags|]

So, I don't THINK that I've put this up before. The original link to the recipe, but here's the gist in case it rotates out of existence:

1 metric fuck-ton of salt. How much? Keep adding it until your cardiologist calls and asks you what the FUCK you are doing (1.25 lbs, for the above recipe).
Water (2 qt in the original recipe, that seems low though)
Fingerling potatoes, one ass-load, cleaned (2lb in the original recipe, though for 2 qt water, that seems WAY too much).
Glass of wine

Do you really need me to spell out the steps? Fine, okay.

Salt into water. Potatoes into water. Water boils. Wait. Have a glass of wine.

EAT.

The idea is to, basically, cook the fingerling potatoes in something as near to seawater as you can get. 30ish minutes should be fine. Let them hang out for a few minutes.

Deliciousness.

They get this wonderful salt crustiness on them, and I think my heart just stopped while thinking about this.

Mushrooms! For Science! [Dec. 12th, 2011|05:56 pm]
[Tags|]

So, it's been a while since I dusted off the old slow cooker, so here's what's churning. We'll see how it goes.

A few small potatoes (I used the small white ones, the red ones looked like shit), sliced up into, oh, 8ths.
Garlic. 'Cause you always need garlic. Smushed up some
Mushrooms. 'Cause, duh, it's for SCIENCE.
1 1/2 cans of low sodium cream of mushroom soup. Not the condensed stuff, the 'heat, serve' stuff.
Chicken breast
Low sodium, free range chicken broth. 'Cause I'm a hippy.

Potatoes in first. Then some of the mushrooms.
Then the chicken
Then some of the broth
Then the cream of mushroom soup
Then more mushrooms
Then garlic

And then?

Cook on low, 8ish hours. We'll see what we've got here.

So, that happened [Nov. 6th, 2011|10:36 pm]
If you follow me else-Intertubes, you already know about this.

Someone asked me why?

I'll be honest with you, Interwebs.

I'm fucking tired.

I'm tired of this shit.

It's time to put back on my "Dagard Ben'Shachar, Destroyer of Worlds" pants. Or at least to start admitting they exist.

I've always been this way [Oct. 23rd, 2011|02:41 pm]
So, let us travel back through the veils of time.

Back to a simpler time, when MST3K had just recently joined up to Comedy Central, and I still lived with the dagRents.

The humanoid shells of the dagRents regularly went to a local church, so, we kept the tradition up. One weekend, a traveling band of either gypsies or choir singers (always been fuzzy on the difference) came to town. And the dagRents offered a bedroom, and lack of knives-in-faces, to a married couple that was traveling with them.

So, it's Satyrday night, we've eaten dinner, the houstGursts are there, and I notice the time. And start twitching MST3K is on soon! ZOMG!

I start staring at the dagFather, twitching over at the TV, and pointing to my wrist. It takes him a good 20 minutes, but he realizes, "ZOMG! MST3K!" eventually.

We're both mentally going "ok, who is gonna be the jackass?", when finallly the dagFather (bless his hearts) goes "ok, hate to be a horrible host, but, we kind of have a tradition here on Satyrdays. We watch this show called Mystery Science Theater 3000"

And then, our heads exploded....

"Oh, we love that show! Joel is our son-in-law" sayeth our guests. And proceed to tell about how he and their daughter met, etc etc.

.....

....

....

Yeah.

The dagFather and I mentally arrange "ok, humour them, they leave tomorrow, let's let them have this", the MST3K is watched, everybody giggles, good times are had.

We let this issue pass from our minds, the geusts leave, life settles back to what passes for normal when you live with the dagRents.

Then, about two weeks later...

"Oh, look, UPS left us a box! And it's addressed to me!"

So, being an inquisitive dag, I open it.

Lifetime subscription to the MST3K fanclub. All sorts of schwag.

Oh yeah. And a coffee cup signed by Tom Servo, Crow, Joel and Gypsy.

I call the dagFather "Holy shit, PainInducingOne! The humans! They were srs!"

The dagFather comes home from a busy day of torturing mennonites, and goes "um, holy crap!"

Carried that damn thing with me, point to point, for I guess near 20 years.

Yes, it's the MST3K coffee cup at Nerdvana (on the mantle, last I saw).

It's always amusing... [Oct. 16th, 2011|07:58 pm]
So many people see me so many different ways. So, here's a question

How do you see me, intertubes? What image / memory comes to mind when you think of me? (I think anonymous comments are enabled, so, feel free).
